Report giant in NZ
I heard today of a pumpkin that measures 7 foot six from the vine end to the
blossom end, measured is a straight line - not OTT or around a hemisphere.
Looks like it will be a NZ record if it is true - I may hunt it out next
weekend.

Yep Chris it can happen, sometimes the pumpkins will have no seeds or a very
limited number. I don't know how many the 1140 had but I know of several big
ones with a handfull or even no seeds at all. I' don't know the reason why
but do know it can happen.

Thanks for the information.
My garden area was indeed in farm land until about three years ago. I
found the hard pan in other areas of the yard when I was planting trees
then,
so I suspect the plow is the culprit rather than chemicals. The ripper plow
sounds like a good idea and probably less destructive then the backhoe. I
know I need to build the soil up with manure, leaves, and what not but that
is something that will take years and hundreds of yards of material.
Thanks

Matt,
Sorry, but I have no idea what the problem is. I had something that
looked very similar to this on some of my plants last year. It would start
as
small spots like these and would progress to involve most of the leaf. Most
of leaves on the plant seemed to be affected. The plant seemed to have
stunted growth but it did grow a 325 LB pumpkin. I'll be watching for other
replies to your yellowing.
Good Luck

Hello Pumpkin Folk,
I am back on the list after having to change ISP's. Earthlink bought
out the company we were using. Didn't like some of their policies so we
had to hunt donw another company here. We are locked up here in Duke
Center. We have a small phone company between us and the outside world,
that prevents us from using some of the major ISP companies. Long story.
Just wanted to get back in here and say to those that offered us seed.
We will get to you soon with our envelopes.
The book-mobile didn't have the books that some suggested we read. We
did get a copy of one of "Don Langevin's" books. "How to grow World
Class Giant Pumpkins". We found the picture of the pumpkin filled with
water, for added weight, rather comical, but did wonder about what
person would go to such ends to win a weigh off.
We are still having snow here pretty much daily it doesn't amount to
much. Makes us wonder if spring is ever going to show up. This seems
like an very long winter.
The "Red Winged Black Birds" have been around for some weeks now,
Robins showed up a few days later. The Red Wing Balck birds are usually
a good sign. They are interesting to watch as the males make claim to
the best nesting areas. Battles go on for days it eventually calms down.
Then! The girls arrive a few weeks later and it starts all over again.
The days are staying light longer and the temps are gradually going
up. We have seen 40's and a few 50's but night temps still drop into the
teens and twenties. This will be a "normal" year for this part of Pa. We
won't be able to get anything into the ground until mid May. We should
have more than enough time for good gardens and fields.
I hope to meet some of the local growers this year. Andy Wolf lives
in near-by New York and there are other growers here in Pa. that are not
to far away. Would like to meet some of them also.
That's all from Duke Center for now.
Gary...

This type of yellowing is genetic in origin and nothing to worry about. I
have a plant whose first leaves were like this. It's a pigment issue and the
tendency runs in the AG variety, showing itself in the plant's infancy.
Only one of my plants had this so far this season. As the plant develops,
the
subsequent leaves are normal. Don't worry about it.

In the book I have here by Don Langevin, he list a number of people
that have a history with pumpkins. However most of the credit seems to
belong to Howard Dill and his work with seeds from pumpkins his family
had for years and seed from a record pumpkin by another Canadain grower
Willian Warnock.
Warnock grew a 403lb pumpkin in 1903, a record that held for 75
years. Dill broke that record in 1979 with a 438.5 pumpkin. He, Dill, is
the holder of the patent of the Alantic Giant Pumpkins.
There is more detail in the Langevin book; " How to grow World Class
Giant Pumpkins.
Hope that helps some.

Too late for the Round Robin exchange this year, but there are growers on
this list who will help you get started with some good seeds if you need
them.
Watch the list during the month of November, when Leslie Vogt posts the
information on how to participate. You can look forward to it for next
season
if you grow a pumpkin this year and harvest your seeds to offer in the
exchange.

I agree with Barb, the leaf appears to be healthy. Just a genetic thing.

Subject: Its the pits
I was wondering whats the general consensus was on pits. I know some
growers feel that a nutrient pit full of good stuff might tend to keep the
roots from spreading out. Last year I tried the no pit method and there
didn't appear to be a big difference although my weights weren't as high
off by 50 lbs or so..........yes its the pits ! but that season is gone
now. what to do this season. I have also noticed some top growers that
had abandon the pit only to return......................what I am looking
for are some monsters that have been grown without the pit
practice............just tilling 10 inches or so...............or a general
feeling towards the pits................................MB

Have you tried using a Pulaski? It's a great tool to have. It can go through
some very hard soil.

yesterday and I found a layer of hard pan about 10 inches below the soil

a large digging fork. It seems to be under most of my garden area. I've fond
it in other areas of the yard when I've planted trees and shrubs. I can
eventually get a hole big enough to plant a tree but that is not 3000 square
feet for AG's. I've thought about renting a backhoe and digging the whole
thing down 2 feet, a post hole digger would probably have a similar effect.
Does any one have any suggestions? Do I really need to do anything?

I suspect this may have been a limiting factor in the past).

Yo Al,
I have WPC newsletters going back to 1988 and at that time nobody
listed what seed their pumpkins had been grown from. My quess is that they
have bought seed from Howard or Ray on the basis it was from a fruit of a
certain weight i.e. over 400lb or over 500lb with no specific parentage
mentioned. They may have used seed from one of their own grown from a Howard
or Ray seed and being that far back in time they have not recorded
information as we all do today.
