I seem to be in the minority but I go up instead of down.As far as I'm concerned all your doing is digging a pond when going down.Where's the water gonna go if it's wet?If your in sand or run some perf.pipe in the bottom to drain it go up.I know from 20 plus years experience that if you have a week of wet weather and you go out near your pits bring rope because your gonna need to pull your self out.And plus going up you get dryer warmer ground quicker in the spring.I have a new patch this year and I'm atleast a foot higher than the surrounding ground already.Just my thoughts and what has worked for me.Jerry Rose-personal best 816
PS I still think there's a pair of my knee boots at my dads-no in-no under my patch at my dads from about 15 years ago!!
 
I'm lucky my whole garden is on a plateau so it is well drained.
