Ned:

There are many schools of thought on this subject. None are engraved in 
stone. 

In my patch, which is in FL and has southern exposure, I have a plant on the 
western end of the patch and two on the eastern end. The western plant is 
vining toward the east; one of the plants in the eastern end of the patch is 
vining toward the west and the second one is vining south.

Not a problem, as I will train the southern vining plant to grow west 
carefully by placement of stakes as growth progresses.
