If you have a small patch and want to maximize the size of your plant, then you'll need to transplant your seedling on the edge of your patch and have it grow to the other side.  Just remember that the plant will drop to the ground and grow in the direction opposite the first true leaf.  Last year my vine grew from south to north and produce an 827.6.  I don't think it really matters which direction you train the vine.

Dear List:   As I do not have enough experience to know for sure I am asking the veterans out there.   Do the main vines tend to head in the same direction each year based on the track of the sun?   My space is limited and it might help me in deciding  which section of the patch to plant.
