vine borrers

to start with i would just like to say sorry about my poor    typing skills,but anywhay I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me why nobody(as far as I know)covers thier
entire vine with soil.If vine borrers are evryones worst night maire and they are prone to attack the base,or stump of the plant, then why doesn't evryone cover the stump of thire plants.there must be a downfall to this because out of all the info that I'v read this is not a commen practice,not even amongst the heavy hitters,and their supposed to know it all.most of them seem to start covering their vines at the first node or so.any opinions would be helpful but the answer would be nice.thanks!          and good luck this year...
