Stump rot is a common problem and burying the stump will only increase the
chances of developing it. The stump should be kept dry and well ventilated.
Old dead leaves and such should be removed from the stump area, and if any
small cracks start to appear, Captan should be applied. The main vine is
also susceptable and should not be buried very deep and it must not stay
wet for extended periods. Hope this helps.
