California Growers Annual Spring Meeting

The California Growers Annual Spring Meeting was held yesterday
at Borchard's Farms in Salinas. This event was hosted by Tom
and Katherine Borchard and about 40 West Coast Growers showed
up.

Except for the cold winds which kept blowing everybody's hats
out into the artichoke fields, this event was a total success.

There was good food, lots of grower talk, raffles, auctions and
tons and tons and tons - of pumpkin seeds.

I wasn't really prepared for the seed raffle. An entire small
building was filled with tables overflowing with thousands of
seed packets. The seeds were lined up alphabetically by grower
and included most of the top seeds on the planet.

It wasn't a seed raffle really - it was more like a seed orgy
of sorts, as lucky growers stampeded into the building and
could snag any packet of thier favorite genetics. It was like
a bunch of kids let loose in a candy store.

After a while, I got so chilled from the cold air blowing off
the Pacific that I couldn't relieve myself. Most the other
growers didn't seem to mind the cold. Jack LaRue thought it was
so balmy that he walked around in a tee shirt the whole day -
There for a while, I thought he was going to take his shirt off
and catch a tan. The cold Pacific Northwest winters must
really toughen up those northern growers.

For those who missed this event - you missed a great
opportunity to rub shoulders, snag some top seeds and pork out.
I'd like to thank the Borchards, the Glasiers, Bob Troy and
all the other folks who helped make this event a great success.

I really do believe that California will see it's first 1,000
pounder from grown on native soil this year. The seed that
will do it was probably sitting on one of those tables at
Borchard's Farm......
