Kevin,
You mentioned that
last year you put an aeration system in your site # 3 hole.
Now that you are
expanding the size of this hole to 6 feet wide, 15 feet long and
4 feet deep ("Grand
Canyon West" !!) will you expand the aeratrion system as
well,
and to what extent
??
Can you give us a
little info on how your aeration system will be set up for
this
site.

List
that is a joke you will find out why right now.... I was just writing another grower telling him about my 3 soil experiments for my mounds and thought I will let everyone in on it. To say the lest I am a 29 year old kid and I love to play in the dirt. I do it over 60 hours a week. With that said I have my own yard and I can dig as much as my heart will allow. I am adventurous and if I dig one foot deep I want to see what's one foot deeper. I have found LOTS of interesting things over the years and this year was no different. Here is my three experiments.
# 1 Experiment ... is just flat, compost added on top and tilled in.
#2 Experiment.. Pit dug 5 feet by 7 feet by 2 1/2 feet deep (square) and main runner trenched out all soil spread evenly over patch then tilled in and evenly mixed back in the hole.
#3 Experiment....Now here is grand canyon WEST. Mound # 3 dug 6 feet wide 3 3/4 to 4 feet deep and fifteen feet long (square). Completely by hand this is the monster of the back yard.all the soil is mounded on the sides of the hole and will be pushed into the hole and amended with commercial grade compost and vermiculite. As I back fill I will rototiller every 8 inches giving an even mix and hopefully a better root system. we will have to see....
# 3 was the hole I put the aeration system in last year. As I dug the hole last year I found 2 roots from neighbors trees about as big as a pencil. This year I found over 30 roots and some as big as an inch. Cool part was the bigger ones were at 4 feet deep which meant my aeration system got oxygen deeper than 4 feet in the ground and the roots from the pumpkins and other plants didn't have a burier that limited there growth.
I think this may be the trick for years to come but I am a little tired of digging holes this year I still have to fill them back in !!!! Any Questions please email me privately and I can brake down the other interesting things I have found in my soil profile etc !!!!
Take care all and have a wonderful 2002 season !!!
