RE: Rapitest Electronic pH and Fertility Meter

Just dug it out...it's very broad, it lists pumpkins as 5.5 to 7.5,
cukes 5.5 to 7.0, watermelon 5.5 to 6.5, marrow 6.0 to 7.5. It also
lists Squash, Canaloupe & Cucumber under the heading "SLIGHTLY ACID TO
ALKALINE SOIL PLANTS (pH 6.5 to pH 7.2)" but lists pumpkins under "ACID
SOIL PLANTS (pH 6 to 6.5)"

There's also a page on soil types and changing pH:

To increase by 1 pH:

Sandy soil: 2.5-3.5 lbs ground limestone or 2-3 lbs hydrated lime per
100 sq ft
Loam soil: 3.5-5 lbs ground limestone or 2-3 lbs hydrated lime per 100
sq ft
Clay soil: 5-6 lbs ground limestone or 3-4 lbs hydrated lime per 100 sq
ft

To decrease by 1 pH:(per 100 sq ft)

Iron Sulfate: 2 lbs
Ammonia Sulfate: 1.75 lbs
Flowers of Sulfur: 1.75 lbs
COMPOST: 222 LBS
MANURE: 66 LBS

I FOUND THIS ABOUT THE METER'S SCALE RANGES (They are actually labeled
Too Little, Ideal, and Too Much):

--------------TOO LITTLE-------IDEAL--------TOO MUCH-----
NITROGEN:....... <50PPM.......50-200PPM..... >200PPM
PHOSPHOROUS:.... <4PPM .......4-14PPM ...... >14PPM
POTASH:......... <50PPM.......50-200PPM..... >200PPM

Hope this helps.
Mark

Mark,

What does the pamphlet say about pumpkins or squash...out of curiosity.

I've been using this meter for a few years now and am happy with it. It
doesn't give NPK but instead has 3 ranges on the scale, something like
low, ideal & high (I don't have it in front of me right now but I
believe that's what it says) and each range covers about 3/8" of needle
travel. You can actually see it work by inserting it in moist soil (low
to ideal reading) vs moist straight humusy compost (usually high
readings.) Directions say that the soil or soilmix must be wet but not
puddly. I ammend until I get readings just at beginning of the high
range. It also comes with an abrasive pad to clean the electrodes
between uses as well as a small leaflet stating many plant pH ranges.
Hope this helps.

Hello Everyone!
Just 6 to 8 more weeks till planting time!.....I don't know about all of
you but I'm sure getting antsy...

Have any of you tried this meter?
I understand that you can either switch it to test for pH or for
fertility but I'm wondering exactly what the fertility test tells you.
Does it tell the amounts of N, P, and K separately? Any help on this
would be appreciated!
