can i plant under a tree?

hi am new to the growing pumkins and want to know if i can plant pumkins 
under a tree?
we dont have alot of room and had them in the garden last yr. but they 
overtook the garden.
So this yr we are moving the patch .......need to know if under a tree is ok?
