Starting growing

What is really the best time to start your pumpkin in-doors? I live in
Ontario (ie it could be cold for a _while_), and if I start it indoors,
and spring takes its sweet time getting here, is it ok to keep it indoors
for a while? Will it harm its potential growth? If its a dumb question,
forgive me, this my first time growing a giant pumkin :)
