I was reading the discussion on vine longevity and came up with a question...
Does anybody know the environmental cues which cause a vine to advance
through the stages of its lifecycle? The fact that early-planted pumpkins
tend to mature early suggests that the clock is largely internal. On the
other hand, it *seems* like pumpkins in northern areas have a compressed
growth period relative to pumpkins in lower latitudes.
I'm wondering if we can "trick" a pumpkin plant into growing first on an
Ottawa schedule, and *then* on a California plan. If we understood more
about these effects, we might be able to add a few extra pounds.
