John:
You are lucky that you didn't lose your plants piercing the vine and infusing
that concoction! I recommend reading Don Langevin's "How to Grow World Class
Giant Pumpkins."
There are no tricks, but skill and good judgement play a role. Just pray for
good weather, plant great seeds in good soil, and water, water, water! Feed
them high notrogen fert during the plant growth stage, and change to high
potassium fert after fruit set. Remember, a little fert goes a long way. Put
it on the soil, not into the plant stem!
Watch for fungus, insects and other vermin, and report your results this fall!
