Re: News article and Squash bug killers.

Glenn,
Heard it was a good article but haven't seen it yet. We were talking last
week about squash bugs and what will kill them other than a hammer. I talked
to Dr. Ashley of the University of Conn. He thinks Asana is the best bet. It
is good on squash bugs, vine borers, APHIDS, cucumber beetles. I think it is
an artificial pyrethroid. It kills and deactivates quickly so the spray cycle
might be every 5 days for the vineborer. Now for the bad news.....the last
time I bought it, it was over 100 dollars a gallon and it may be a restricted
use pesticide in some states, meaning you need a licence to buy it. I think it
is a good idea for all non organic growers to get a pesticide licence in your
state. #1 it allows you to buy chemicals that would not normally be available
to a back yard gardener. #2 and more important, the training in preparation
for your licence will give you good knowledge about the safe handling and
proper application of these chemicals. In Connecticut you receive training and
take an open book test that is not difficult. The holder of a licence must go
to vegetable seminars from time to time to keep up to date on the latest info
on restricted use chemicals.
