Re: tree seeds

Scott,

In October, 1996 I planted 60 seeds from a local apple tree.
I simply put them in a 2' by 2' bed and covered with about a
half inch of soil.  In the spring of '97, close to 50 came up.  I
was amazed at the percentage.  I transplanted 10 of them
last year, and plan on  doing the rest this spring.  I only have
about 25 left because some have died, and I killed a few while
digging up last years transplants.  The tallest ones are only
about 18" but had a lot of leaves last year.  It will be a long time
before I can sit under them.  Pumpkin pie comes much quicker.

I have started some apple trees inside by freezing the seeds for
1000 hours in ice in my freezer but I think I over watered when
they were about 2" tall.  They all died.  I didn't have a very high rate of
germination with these.  Only about 10%.  It's still fun to try though,
and I will probably try the indoor method again.

Good luck with yours,

Dan in Vermont
