sand

I am thinking of adding some coarse sand to improve the drainage of my clay
soil. I was wondering if anyone had a recommendations on how much to use.
Each plant has about 1100-1350 sq ft. My soil varies quite a bit from one
garden to the next. Some of it is a rather heavy clay and drains very
poorly.
