I just received a seed from a grower that lives a few miles from me.
He provided one of his 300+lb pumpkins to a local farm market for
display. Also at this farm market the owner buys a truly "giant" AG for
display for their festival. The seed that I received came from that
displayed pumpkin. The information I received regarding the pumpkin is
this- The pumpkin supposedly was grown in Ohio. It was puchased by the
farm market, they had one on display last year from the same grower. I
saw the pumpkin sitting on the mechanical scale at the market after
Halloween (it's about 20 miles from where I live). The pumpkin was
sitting on a pallet on the scale but the scale read 968lbs,(that's still
over 900lbs)and thats about a month after harvest. I drove past in the
beginning of Nov. and stopped when I saw it on the scale. I do not know
if the scale was accurate but I know the pumpkin was huge. There was
something written on the side of the pumpkin, maybe a name or something,
it seems to me like it was a short name maybe 4-5 letters (if it was a
name). I didn't pay close attention to it, I wasn't expecting to get
any seeds from it, but am glad I did.
The farm market's name is Zehner's in Nescopeck, PA. If anyone has
information regarding this pumpkin I'd greatly appreciate it. Once the
market opens in the spring I'll be able to stop and talk to them but I
thought maybe someone on the list would have information on the grower
etc...
