Wayne,
Don't assume too much about what the good Lord is trying to tell you.
Remember what Job went through just because God had a bet. If someone
misrepresented what they gave you then they are the one to blame for any
problem. This is not a reflection on you. When it comes to seed trade it
has to be based on trust. You trusted the person who provided the seeds and
they betrayed that trust. I guess we all have to look closely at who we are
dealing with these days. It's sad to think that even the pumpkin growing
community has members who would be so dishonest. I'm sorry this happened to
you and the others who you sent the seeds to. As far as those highly sought
after seeds such as the 827 Holland and 567.5 Mombert go, I would not expect
there are many or any left out there. I know Joel only had a few of his
left and we won't see many more 567.5 first generation offspring from anyone
other than Kirk himself as he gave out all the seeds he was able to share
long ago. That was a lot of seeds for both those fellows but I expect they
all have been planted by growers both with and without much experience over
the past 7 years eith varying results.
So don't beat yourself up too much about this situation. My experience with
my fellow pumpkin growers has led me to believe I can trust them and I would
be hurt and dismayed if I ran into a similar experience. Try to remember
how much fun you have had with this hobby and don't let one bad experience
put you off it if you think you can still enjoy growing. I guess we'll all
have to be careful when it comes to acquiring second hand seeds. If you
can't get them from the source then get them from one of the growers
organizations, then it's caveat emptor for all others. I would be inclined
to confront whoever it was that perpetrated this fraud on you. I would also
let the group know who it was. They may deny it or they may come clean or
perhaps it was an honest mistake. But the other members on the list should
know who it was you are dealing with so they don't put themselves in your
situation. And if you feel you have to give this hobby up and this
experience has left such a bad taste in your mouth you cannot get rid of it,
then I'd like to suggest growing and exhibiting roses or dahlias. I have
been growing and exhibiting roses for several years and it's a decent group
of people who are involved in it and there is a lot of satisfaction to be
gained from the hobby as well. I just like competative gardening as I expect
you do to. It's one of the few things I do competatively that doesn't wear
on my knees too much. I hope some of what I've written here helps. I
personally feel you have been an asset to this group and if you leave this
hobby it will be a loss for all of us.
Best Wishes,
Chris Michalec
