John-You raise some interesting questions and I could only speculate on the
answers but I do know a few facts.

The 609 Laemmle 89,male parent of the 567.5 Mombert 92,has contributed
genes to 8 of the 44 GP's in Canada over 700 pounds in 1998.

These are with the 567.5 as mother (2),grandmother (4) or grandfather (2).

The average weight of these 1998 descendants was 807 pounds.

For these and other interesting facts see the Ottawa-St Lawrence newsletter
with the 44
pedigrees.

In case you need an OSLG contact,I will "cc" this to the site
coordinator,so you can note his email address.

P.S.-I think your "lost tribe" idea is interesting.Certainly any "fresh
genes" to the winning existing pool must prove themselves to be accepted by
growers. If you find fresh genes that can compete with the proven known
genes people will grow them.If they can't compete they will fall by the
wayside and be forgotten. The GP world is very competitive but the best
genes will always rise to the top.
Each year of evolution of the top GP's makes it more unlikely that "fresh"
good genes will be discovered, although I would like to see it happen to add
more diversity.
