RE: Reply:why will people pay $80+ for a 946?

Well for my two cents worth, a big part of why someone will pay that much
for a 946
seed is that AG growers are a generous lot, and will spend a few extra bucks
to
help a growers group with their fundraising, or help an new group raise
funds to be a
sanctioned weigh off site with cash awards for the growers of the heaviest
fruit. They
are also a practical bunch and want to get something they perceive to be of
value for
this money. The 946 has qualified as a proven producer and even if it
doesn't produce
a large pumpkin for the grower who gets it, it's probably a good one to have
in your cross.
E.G. the Donkers 490, itself not a large fruit but it has a good looking
pedigree.
So if your budget doesn't allow for big spending on a proven seed and
you're seeking
a diamond in the rough, you spend the time studying the family trees and
plant what you
think will give you the best results. At the PNWGPG meeting I purchased
some seeds
and participated in the auction. I may never plant some of them but I
helped with the
funding for my local growers group and maybe someone will grow an 1100 lb.
pumpkin
this year with a seed that I also happen to have. That would certainly
influence what I
plant next year. Good luck to all this season. Lets see records topple in
every state and
province.
