 Could I tell if a vine is going flat on the "second" true leaf?  Actually, 
 what should be that second one looks like a wide flat stem which then splits 
 out into three leaves of equal size.  I believe the next one coming after 
 those looks like a single.
 
 This is on that plant that came from the badly cracked seed case.  Now I'm 
 wondering if it's just a mutant from the git-go.
 
 Not to worry, I started the third "top tier" seed back on May 1.  That one 
 so far looks the most aggressive of all, so 2 out of three look terrific 
 (with room to grow just two).

You usually can't tell until it has vined out about 18": -24".  A ribbon vine 
plant will grow 2-3 times faster than others but may not show a ribbon for a 
couple of feet.  If they only grew a Pumpkin that fast.
