Larry: You are correct I'd bet it was the wind twisting the plant! in the
past I have just used twist ties to close the crack and then took them off
when the crack has healed.

Had the same thing happen to me last year, the stem on one plant split
from the leaves down into the ground. I think the wind bent or twisted
the plant. I packed some wet sand around the stem area and let it go and
it later produced an 1190 pound pumpkin.
