My opinion is its not looking too good for the current main vine on your
Reynolds. If you look further into the "ball" of leaves at the growing tip
you are likely to see more of the "multiple vine" situation.....this is when
the plant puts additional leaves/side vines/tendrils etc from the area thats
only supposed to have one. It usually gets worse and the vine itself flattens
out and looks like a pair(or more) of vines connected by thier sides. These
plants tend to be more aggressive growers...as indicated by your 4+ inches a
day....but never seem to put out big pumpkins on the flat/multiple vine. You
will also have problems in warmer climates because you now have twice the
amount of leaves you should with the same root system resulting in extra
wilting. I had a 1092 go multiple/flat last year...it then split into two
like a snakes tongue...but on the absolutely brutal advice from Barb....I
Bobbitized it. I trained a side vine from the first 18" from the stump around
the side to take its place .I actually had 50% shade cloth over the plant
when it was a flat vine and couldn't keep it from wilting. I ended up pulling
the 1092 and grew out the 879*Rockwell.
So,it may be a blessing ......Id probably wait a week and see what the vine
tip does, but then I'd hack it off and go with a better situated side vine
from near the stump. No big ones have ever come from a multiple/flat
vine....some good ones have come from side vines used to replace
multiples,though no real monsters.
First choice...go with the backup plant.
Second choice....whack it !! And train a side vine to take
over............thats the view from here on Long Island........GlennA.
