Washington mini update
Cool temperatures continue to prevail, we've only been around 70º a couple
times yet and pumpkins are still in their cloches. We have had a few sunny
days though and the cloches warm up nicely when the sun is out. The 563
Geerts is finally starting to look like a decent plant at the 5 leaf stage
and beginning to vine out. The 427 and 508 Michalec are both looking good ,
but the 508 has a split stem from the ground up to the first true leaf. Not
sure how it happened as it is unaffected by wind in the cloche. The split
was untreated as I thought this would be an automatic self cull and the
split dried out nicely on it own and it hasn't seemed to affect the growth
of the plant whatsoever. These two are in a virtual dead heat and it will be
a tough call to make when I have to cull one. This is especially true after
Larry's comment on his 1190 growing on a plant that did this last year.
The 729 Bobier is not an impressive plant. Leaves are small and somewhat
wrinkly and it looks more like a geranium at this point than an AG. I am
unsure if I will keep it and even though it was getting somewhat late for
starting further backups in this climate I decided to direct start an 835
McIntyre next to it and planted the seed last Saturday. It was pushing up
the soil yesterday and I expect it will be up today..... It's a very late
start for western Washington, but I'm going to let it go and see what
happens. I will do a little experimenting with these plants as they have a
dedicated space and are several weeks behind where they should be. If the
Bobier doesn't start showing that it wants to grow it will be out of there.
There are a couple other people growing AG's at the P-patch this year. It
will be interesting to see what the other guys do with theirs. Gordon
Tanner is one of the growers and another is a fellow named Rawley who helped
me with loading last year and decided to try his hand with it. If we can
help each other out with watering we'll all be better off. This is going to
be an interesting season.
