Hello everyone this is my first posting and from what I have read there
seems to be a lot of information passed around here. this is my first
year of growing atlantic giant pumpkins. First of all I am not a serious
grower because I don't think I have the back yard for it. I live in
California in the bay area. Last year I grew some regular pumpkins which
grew to about 8" for my daughter. I thought they would grow larger than
that. While I was talking to a person last year around October who ran a
Pumpkin patch he said I needed to get some Atlantic Giant seeds. I
looked over the internet and bought some seeds from P&P which were from
an 800lb+ pumpkin and some from 400lb+ pumpkins. The person at the Patch
said just get some chicken manure and build some large mounds and put
the seeds in there and watch them grow. I am not trying to grow very
large pumpkins but I just have a bet with the wife that I can grow a 50+
lb pumpkin. I did the direct start method about a month ago. Made two
mounds of chicken manure about 2' high each. Built a cold frame around
each of them. Put in 3 seeds about 3 inches apart in one mound and 4
seeds 3 inches apart in the other.
Now my update. Out of the 3 800+lb seeds 2 sprouted and are doing very
well. The largest leaf on the two is about 18". On the other hill out of
the 4 seeds 3 have sprouted and the largest leaf is about 10". I have a
feeling from what I have read that there is only supposed tobe one seed
per mound. Is this correct? If so can they still be transplanted to
other mounds without killing them off. Also here in the California
suburbs, back yards aren't very big so I don't think I have enough room
for them. my growing area is only about a 20'x20' area. What do you
think I should do to get that 50+lb pumpkin to win the bet. I use a drip
system every other day and I use miracle grow every other week. Am I
watering too often? How often should I spray for bugs? Any inputs would
be greatly appreciated....
