Just send $29.95 to 'I Wanna Be a Heavy Hitter' .com, and you too can grow
pumpkins as big as houses. And as an added bonus for a limited time a free
pack of three, yes three, 801.5 Stelts seeds...... Schae right, and monkeys
might fly out of my butt.
Anyway it is time for another exciting (partially) episode of (drums please)
The Oregon Update. Starring the weird and wacky 'Pumpkinguru' and 'Mrs Guru'
who thanks to a lot of luck and no skills snuck the state record plaque away
from the best grower in the state, Captain Kirk Mombert, last year. Will
this feat be duplicated???? Doubtful, but hey its worth a try. Here is how
we stand as of today...
Site #1 This site holds my #900.8 Lyons SQ and my 2 #800 Edwards SQ plants
which I am running in the 'Flag' formation. All three plants are within 10%
of each other in terms of size, and look fairly healthy. They are a bit
behind last years plants in this site at this time, but nothing to be
concerned with yet. I am hoping for a nice squash out of each of these plants
even know the 800 produced a pumpkin last year.
Site #2 This site holds the #986 Hester SQ, #616 Corkum SQ, and the 730
Stellpflug P. The 730 was the first one out of 5 that I have gotten to
germinate in the past 3 years. The 986 is proving to be a booger to
germinate across the land, so I guess I was lucky for I only planted one.
The 616 produced the worlds record in 2000 for all of us squash enthusiasts,
so we will see. The 986 is among the top 5 plants in the patch. All three
of these plants are happy, and as a footnote, the 986 and 616 are going to be
'Flagged' as well.
Site #3 This site holds two plants that are rippin'. My number 1 and two
plants in the patch are my #611.5 Hester SQ from 99 and the #1026 Holland.
Both have been tipped and are showing tendrils. The 611 holds a slight lead,
but the two are so close its scary. The 1026 split its stalk from base of
main vine to the top of the root cluster, but shows no ill affects.
Site #4 This site holds the #846 Calai and the #801.5 Stelts. I have wood
handy to knock on, so I can say the 801 is the best one I have had so far.
It is also in the top 5 in the patch. The 846 is lagging behind the 801, but
still looks good.
Site #5 This site hold the #780 Eaton and the #940 Mombert 98. The #723
Bobier is also in this site, but, huge but, it is 2 weeks older than my 940
Mombert and the Mombert has already passed it. In other words, what the 940
did in 10 days, the 723 did in 24. The 780 Eaton is doing fine.
Site #6 This is traditionally my 'splitter' site for some reason. I held
true to form by planting an 815 Checkon here as well as a 946.5 Geerts. Both
these plants are weird, and have been since the second true leaf stage. I
think the 946 is going to flat vine and am prepared to yank it and replace it
with another competitive seed. It will be late for GPC day, but the late
weighoff here in the PNW make it okay. Both plants have nice color and
vigor, but their leaves are contorted as if the plants were turning. Odd.
Site #7 This has been home to the 935 Lloyd for now its third year. It is
also home ot the #850.5 Hester. The 850 is right there in the top 5 after
being slow out of the gate. The 935 was first up this year, but has slowed
somewhat after some sun damage occured in this cloche.
Site #8 This is the home to the #969.5 LaRue. It looked terrible at the get
go, but has really started moving. It is in crappy soil, but is making the
most of it.
Site #9 This is home to the #968 Hester. Like the 969 LaRue has poor soil,
and will be run in the 'Flag' formation. This plant looks nice, green and
aggressive.
Overall, no real complaints so far. Lisa lost her 862.5 Hester plant due to
a mole, but after final cuts are made, she will be nabbing her 4th from what
is left. Her 846 Calai looks good, but my 801 is up to the challenge. My
935 will bring down her 946 and my 968 will show up her 969. I just hope she
doesn't take the 616 for her squash since she lost her 862. Other than that,
lots of bugs this year in the form of aphids, but none have found the
pumpkins yet. 36 plants are in the experimental patch and all is well.
Live Long and Prosper,
The Pumpkinguru
