Though the days may seem warm and mild, wind can have a disastrous effect on the stems and leaves of delicate plants. Either through windchill or excessive evaporation, the very protection you gave to the seed as it germinated is probably that which led to it's decline. If you left the glass propped-up, the wind could have easily swept under the glass and literally "sucked the good" right out of the plant, as it would not have been hardened-off yet to tolerate this.
