Re: When to cull?
Don,
I like to start two plants about 2 feet apart
initially on each site and then cull the weaker one.
I usually wait to cull until the plants start to vine
and have successfully flopped down. By then it
usually is apparent which plant is growing the most
aggressively and whether or not it's going to flat
vine. I don't think it matters if they crowd each
other a bit before you cull.
On my four sites I've only culled one plant at this
time:
site 1: 789 Zunino/ 789 Zunino - Five leaves and
starting to vine. Had three and culled one which
showed some signs of disease. The two left are
running neck and neck.
site 2: 846 Calai - I was going to pair this plant
with the 1056 Deuck but it exploded so fast out of the
pot that I didn't bother planting the 1056 Deuck next
to it. Currently, it is at five leaves and growing
rapidly even though it was started a week later than
the 789 Zuninos.
site 3: 937 Mombert/823 Glazier - The Mombert is
bolting ahead of the Glazier even though the Glazier
germinated 5 days before the Mombert. The Glazier also
has small leaves. Both are at four leaves. I'll let
the Glazier stick around until the Mombert
successfully flops.
site 4: 983 Ciliberto/801 Ciliberto - The 801 was in
the lead but has started showing either desease or sun
scald problems on it's newer leaves. Both plants are
four leaf and about the same size and have already
laid down. I'm definitely leaning toward the 983 but
am waiting to see how they vine.
Hope this helps.
