Kenny,
I look for any insect damage (i.e. vine borers, depending on
where you're from), fungus, rot, critter damage, etc.
There are two schools of thought on this. I tend to want to
see it so I can fix it. The other school believes to cover the main completely
and hope the in sects and critters don't find the buried vine, I got root rot
one year and like to keep the main high and ry, at least the top.
:-)

Thanks Don, Sounds like a plan to me. I'm going
with it, although for me to be able to see the top of the main vine may be
nice, I'm not sure what I would be looking for. Mr. Bojangles/Kenny G./Dzywiak

Kenny,
Personally I like to just cover the main up TO the top so I can see
what's going on with it. You can afford to lose a secondary but not the main.
I cover the sides of the vine but want to see the top.
I cover all secondaries. Don

Does it sound like a good idea to keep the main vine covered in
dirt as it grows to promote more roots?
