Re: light intensity

Hello all,

Photography has been my hobby for the last 27 years
(I'm 37 now...), pumpkins... for only 3 so far.
I have all the light meter equipment one might need,
and some background in how to use it. ;-)

One thing that I don't have is a hoop house, but I
do have some spare 6 mil plastic, and I could rig
up a system from what I already have out there, which
are essentially "topless" hoop houses. I did this
specifically to let the sun in, although it doesn't
give any protection from temperature changes, just
wind.

See:

I could easily take readings, but interpretting the
readings may lead to more questions:

How important is light intensity in the early stages
of the plant's development?

Is some portion of the light spectrum filtered out?
Is this filtering beneficial or detrimental to the
plant? (Its hard to argue with success, and from what
I've seen, the full hoop houses work.)

I also had a plant put in a wall-of-water. Its out now,
and I'm surprised that it grew probably as well as
the other plants, and it looks less "weathered".
I'm also curious as to why (if there is a reason) that
the wall-of-water plastic is green in color, and what
effect this might have.

Of course, our 24 tomato plants are looking great, still
in the wall-of-waters.

When I get a chance, I'll see what I can do about the
light intensity measurements. It'll be at least Saturday
before I can have a full day to take measurements at
different times of the day.

Regards, Cliff in Idaho
