Re: Coca Mulch
Cocoa Bean Shells have been used as a mulch for years, and very successfully.
Yes they do smell like chocolate, can get moldy and can be toxic to dogs if
eaten. In the years I have delt with cocoa bean shells there has been only
one instance, that I am aware of, where a dog got sick from eating cocoa bean
shells. There is not a good mouth feel to the shells as compared to a
chocolate bar. Dogs in general shy away from the shells but will eat a
chocolate bar. I have a dog that will eat chocolate whenever she can get it.
This makes her upchuck and ready for more.
My partner and I used cocoa bean shell heavely last year as a weed
suppresent. Worked real well but we didn't like the way it got soggy after a
good rain. Did not mold either. Nutrient value is OK but not great. I have an
analysis that I will share later.
I have in excess of 500 tons of shell at my disposal if anyone is interested.
