Readers are advised not to confuse the
"chocolate" cocoa mulch with the "coconut" coco mulch.
Hershey says about nutrients:
Cocoa bean shell mulch (CBSM) slowly decomposes and contains
approximately 2.5% nitrogen, 1.0% phosphate and 3.0% potash. Analysis of
CBSM by the Auburn University Soil Testing Laboratory revealed it to be
exceedingly high in specific conductance, soluble salts, phosphorous,
potassium and magnesium; but low in pH, nitrogen and
calcium.
Warning: Cocoa Mulch, which is
sold by home depot, foreman's garden supply and other garden supply stores
contains an lethal ingredient called "Theobromine" and is lethal to dogs
and cats. It smells like chocolate and really attracts dogs. They will ingest
this stuff voraciously and die.
Maybe if you
neighbor's dog keeps finding a way into your
patch........

I have used it and have mixed feeling..Frankly I like the chocolate fragrance, but it breaks down very fast and it is sticky when wet and sticks to shoes if stepped on. It is attractive ,looks more natural in garden then wood chips. I did not have a mildew problem at all.I guess on 2nd thought, taking in how much more expensive it is I would not recommend it. |
