RE: watering and fertilizing?

Kurt

How did you attach the valve or spigot to your barrel? I was thinking a
1/2 inch or so pipe nipple screwed into a hole drilled in the barrel
would work. Also "Weeping Hose" do you mean the black porous hose you
find at most garden centers?

Steve,
What you are proposing is similiar to what I have done in the past. I'm
referring to the irrigation system. I have a plastic barrel with a
gravity
feed system. It feeds some flexible "weeping" hose that I lay along
each
of the main vines as they grow. It's a good way to mix and apply
fertilizer also, as you suggest. I'm certainly not an expert on this,
but
it worked well for me. I also believe that it is advantageous to water
from the ground and not directly on the leaves in some cases, especially
during cooler, damper, cloudy weather. This might lessen the chances of
mildew on the leaves. Some of the real experts might want to comment on
this. It might also depend on your location. If I remember, some
growers
in the hotter regions mist their plants to cool them off. This is not a
problem where I am since usually it's cooler than what one would desire
and
mildew can become a problem.

My 2 cents.
