Re: thin walled JOL's

Bob:
I'd look more for pumpkins with shallow ribs for carving. The thickness of the walls is easy to control by scraping. Thicker walled pumpkins give you the choice of how thick to leave the walls or to vary thickness for different effects. Pumpkins with deep or badly placed ribs are more difficult to deal with than thick walled pumpkins. As has been stated in previous posts, thin walled usually means short lived. I actually seek out thick walled pumpkins for most of my carvings. Whichever you choose, stay away from those small sugar pumpkins. In my experience, they have skin roughly the hardness of granite. I get hand cramps just thinking about them.
