Re: Shading

Derek,
I have been shading the whole entire plant for 5 years. This year I will not. I normaly leave the shade cloth up until my plants out grows there area witch is about 1000 sq feet and has fully mature leaves. Witch is about late July early August then I remove it. My personal best is only 645 lbs, most of the serious growers here in Napa have grown 800-1000+ lb pumpkins. for this reason I am giving up on the idea. I will say that shading the entire plant will produce the biggest leaves ever, but big leaves don't take home prize money. The biggest leaf that I have grown was 39" across. And also I don't burn leaves in a heat wave very easy. I still plan on putting smaller portable shade structures on the tips of the new growth of the main vine. And I still plan to shade the fruit with a tarp.
I hope this helps you.
