Re: Shading

Derek, most of the shading talk you hear about is
specifically for the pumpkin. Most any type of home
made or store bought shade structure will do as long
as the fruit is shaded for at least the late morning
hours on. Most growers shade the fruit throughout the
entire day.
As far as shading the plant, most growers do not have
that concern. Being from SC, I do have that concern
with our extremely high heat and humidity. Years ago
I set up a misting system to provide a "micro-climate"
for each of my plants in an attempt to keep the heat
tolerable. This works well for me and many others
however, on the down side, you will need to pay
special attention to the Powdery Mildew as the
increase in damp leaves will speed up the occurence of
this. Also on the down side, you need to stay on top
of your spraying program, as too much misting may
rinse your leaves of your applied sprays.
If I was starting over, I would incorporate a 30% sun
blocking tarp for my climate. You in NC may be able
to get away with no "plant" tarp or misting system
depending on your average highs during the season.
You WILL need to shade the fruit however. Also, when
shading the fruit, make sure your tarp, canopy, roof
or whatever you choose to use is a couple feet above
the fruit so as to allow for air movement. You don't
want a greenhouse for your pumpkin. I hope this
helps, BF
