Re: plants

Jesse,

There are "seed leaves" and "true leaves". When you say "real"
leaves, do you mean the latter? If so, they probably need to be
in the patch very soon. They really ought to go out as soon as
the first true leaf is the size of a pea.

I don't really like peat pots. In my soil they don't break down
very fast. In fact, if I was using a peat pot (for a tomato or
something) I just peel away the peat pot when I plant the
seedling, leaving only the potting soil. (Be very careful, your
mileage may vary.)

The format for describing seeds is thus (example):

597 Warren 05 DMG

597 - is the weight of the pumpkin that the seed came from

Warren - name, usually surname, of the grower

05 - The year, be careful with the 1904 Warnock (lol)

The fourth item is optional. It is tagged based on certain
characteristics of the fruit or the weighing situtation. The
important ones are:

DMG - The fruit was damaged, not sound, split, rotting, etc.
If it was damaged in any way before the time of weighing,
it's DMG.

EST - The weight was estimated, probably by measurement.

UOW - The fruit was weighed, but not on a certified scale.

EXH - Exhibition. This one should expire after a particular
weighoff. (IMHO) That is, if it's DMG, use DMG. If it was
just the second fruit in a weighoff that allows only one to be
counted, then that distinction should go away after the
weighoff.

I'm sure there will be some debate on my take of these
definitions.

Regards, Cliff

I am new to the game but I have 4 atlantic giants growing under a
grow light. The first "real" set of leaves are out but there isn't any
roots growing through the outside of my peat pots should I be concerned.
Also the three and four digit numbers that everyone uses to discribe thier
pumpkins are a bit of a mystery to me. What are they? Thanks in advance
for the help and the help I have already recieved.
