I think another reason posts are declining may be due to technical issues
with
this site. I have posted a lot of things that just never show up here. I
think
others have experienced the same thing. After a while you just give up.

I highly recommend the GVGO site and it's message board for information and
communications.

Hi Mike,

In your specific case, it's probably because you're posting from a
different email address than you're signed up with.

Each of your emails has to be manually approved before it goes out
(like this one), so there's often a delay.

That's the case with a lot of other people on the list too.

If you guys can change your email addresses to match it would help
a lot; then message flow would be instantaneous and I'd have a lot
   less work to do. :)

You guys need to communicate this to me! I know it's not your fault that
the site doesn't meet your needs, but it's not going to change unless
someone tells me what they need.

I was trying to solicit testers for a system a couple of years ago that
would allow image use, Web-based posting, and a threaded pumpkins newsgroup,
but nobody responded. :(

The biggest reason for disallowing images and attachments was file size.
With 517 people on the list, the network traffic used to send out files
was too great -- a 100K image suddenly becomes 51MB of email traffic.
That's not too bad, but if there were lots of images being passed around...

Now, the question is whether or not it's too late to make whatever changes
you wanted or if you guys prefer the other forums.

Hi Dave,
I have seeds that I haven't planted. These are mostly seeds I have
gotten from other people, but if there is a specific seed you want let
me know and I will look at what I have. Everyone has been so helpful to
me and I would be glad to help someone else out.

Hi all,

I don't post very often, but I get so much information from this list! I
like really appreciate the quick responses and thoughtful answers. I find
lots of answers to my growing questions here from others. Personally, it is
very valuable to me.

Thanks!

I want to thank you for hosting this list for all these years. I hope I
remember correctly that you are the host.

I don't think the list is that out of date.

This list had a moderator years ago, a guy from Washington State who worked
for an aircraft company, probably Boeing,
he did a good job of keeping the list on subject, I have no idea what
happened, but the list has seemed to have gotten off
subject.

I am totally unqualified to suggest technical improvements. A moderator with
technical skills might work.

My problem with the list is I get 2 responses to each post, and it is
aggravating, if the problem is on my end please give me a fix.

I want the Mallorn list to continue and prosper.

Chris, thanks again for your response:

Chris,

I for one would greatly enjoy seeing the Mallorn list revamped. It and the
GVGO message board are the only boards to which I post. Count me in as a
beta
tester for your new system.

I don't put my two cents in too often.

But, on the subject of the existence of this bulletin board/list.........

......... I'd like to give a big thanks to Chris and everyone who has
played
a maintenance role in it. For years, this list has been out there for our
use. To countless growers, this list has been invaluable. It remains an
important tool for new and experienced growers alike.

I've volunteered my time and effort for things, too. So, I know first hand
the time, effort, and personal resources that people commit to tasks and
activities. Oftentimes, it is much more significant than it looks on the
surface.

I found this bulletin board invaluable during the years that Pumpkin Nook
held charitable seed auctions. As I think about it, people thanked me for
what
I did. But, I never thanked Chris for the years of silent serivce.

Chris...... On behalf of myself, Pumpkin Nook, and the many visitors that
have used the list, I tip my lid (eeerrrrr hat)

Please keep up this great, and useful service!

I don't think the problemis damping off. I do think it is moisture and
temperature like you suggested. I only had the one pumpkin seed whose
genetics
I was looking forward to using to get a little bigger pumpkin from the
Dills.
I use the damp towel/plastic bag method for beans and peas and a few other
seeds. Other seeds I start in my own starting mix and then transplant to the
garden. I expected the pumpkin seeds to jump out of the paper towel. I don't
know why because I do know about the vagaries of seed germination. In the
meantime, I prepped my pumpkin sites pretty much like the rest of the
garden,
except deeper. (Double dig method) I amended with manure, regular and worm
compost, gypsum and Biogro. I also sprayed compost tea, undiluted, on the
bare
soil. Then the weed block goes on over the whole area. I have the framework
ready for a make-shift greenhouse for the pumpkins when I do get them
planted.
I have one Dill up and two others pushing the soil up in their pots. I was
hoping for at least 6 plants so I could cull more selectively. I was hoping
one of the plants I saved would be the Larue/Bobier. The Dills will be great
for this first timer though. Nancy

I realize I might have sounded a little too harsh in my comments.
I hope nobody confuses that with thinking that I don't appreciate
the email list,... I do, very much so. In fact, I think I'm on the short
list of those who occasionally respond to new grower's questions.

Someone asked where has everybody gone, and I gave my
opinion of where I think they've gone. Just trying to be as honest
as possible.

I do think this list could have a revival. We'd have to have some
different angle, some core group of experts perhaps (not implying
me!), something to make it competitive..... For example, on other
forums it's gotten to the point where you ask a question and
everyone responds with their opinion, no matter whether it's right
or wrong... it's kind of a jungle. I think there is a lot of opportunity
out there, this hobby is just getting started! ;-)

Cliff Warren <cliffwarren@yahoo.com> wrote: Here's my take...

As bigpumpkins.com has grown in size and capability, most of the
discussion (the good, the bad, and the ugly) has migrated over there.

This list had it's heyday. But it's a system designed for 1996, not 2006.
You can't even post a photo or attach a spreadsheet to this list.
There were perhaps good reasons for that, at that time. But, where would
we be without photos???

Now there are a lot of good club sites, and individual's sites. Take a
look at gvgo.ca. Wow, that is an excellent site. There is some real content
there.

The bottom line is, this hobby is still very much married to the internet
age. It's just going much more modern. As I write this, I wonder if anyone
is left to read it? Then again, I think we're all still here, as the cost of

being on the list is zilch and it's easier to leave things be than actually
figure out how to unsubscribe.
