Hi, Ben!
When you prepare to plant your seedling, hold the plant so that the first
true leaf is pointing at your chest. Then face the direction you want the
plant to grow and plant accordingly. The plant ought to grow away from the
first leaf, as if that first true leaf were the anchor.
You may have done it correctly last year, as pumpkins (like children) don't
always do what they're spozed to do.
