Re: Pumpkin growth direction

If you were to shade the plant a little so that the sun only gets in from the south the plant should grow to the south. I don't know which leave points the way but this trick should work for any direction I would think.

Happy pumpkins to all!
Since I screwed it up last year, and I am unable to find the answer I want in the book I have on hand, I will through this out to the ether.
Which leaf dictates the direction the plant will grow? Is it the third TRUE leaf, or it the third leaf , which would be the FIRST true leaf.. or is it something else all together? 
  I got it right the first few years, but last year went bad.
