Heating cables

I'd appreciate some advice on the depth and placement of heating cables.

I've just constructed a 4 by 5 foot cold frame (which will ultimately hold
one pumpkin seedling), and have a 17 ft. plastic-covered heating cable
running into it. In the next week or so I'll be transplanting into it
several seedlings in peat pots.

If anyone can help - how deep should the cable be? Should it be directly
under the peat pot, etc etc. The brand is Sentinel, and its 120V 80W if that
makes any difference.

Once the pumpkin is growing I would assume there is no hope (nor any point)
in trying to recover the cable till the pumpkin is harvested. One advantage of
the cable - if a portion is left above ground, it will increase the ambient
temperature inside the cold frame.
