Rick,
We had a discussion on this topic not too long ago, and it seems there was no
specific answer to what causes pumpkins to grow where they do. A rule of
thumb and concensious from the list seems to be that in the northern
hemisphere, the main vine tends to grow in a direction from SE to SW, with
the plant being longer east to west than it is North to south. When It comes
right down to it, you can train your vines to go whereever you want with use
of mounding the soil and coat hangers to hold the vine in place. Heck, you
can even train them to go over a gazebo if you want, I had a 145 pounder
pollinate on top of my gazebo, till it pulled the vine down to the ground.
