Kurt,
It sounds like you are doing fine. You will germinate quicker with soil
temps of 80 to 85. A heating pad can be used under the plants but you must
take care not to get the pad wet. Put a cookie pan over the pad to keep it
dry. There are commercial seed propagation mats also. The number of segments
do correspond to the number of seed clusters inside the pumpkin. I had a 7
segment flower back in 1989 and got all excited until it ended up at 450
pounds. The more segments does not guaa bigger fruit. Most big ones have had
5, with a few 4's and 6's. A 3 segment may not be the best. Filing seeds is
not essential ( I do it)....it just helps the seed crack open a little
easier. It may let water in a little easier too. With the fertilizer, more is
not better. Stay on the high side, but not to the point of toxicity. If your
new leaves open up lime green and change to a healthy deep green by the time
they are the size of a dinner plate.....you are probably in the ballpark. If
the new growth opens up dark green, you are too hot and just use plain water
till it snaps out of it. The Canadian summers with warm days and cool nights,
is ideal for growing big ones.... I wish I was cooler here in Connecticut. I
mean cool in the summer....we had frost yesterday morning.
