rootsup

Dear Lisa
You are not alone with seeds sending roots up instead of down. It has happened to me before and as recent as this morning. I suspect that you have a very warm 85-95 degree and humid environment that the roots do not discriminate in their dirrection. Remember that plants when growing normally send roots down but from these roots it will send other roots which will rise to the surface of the soil where you can see them . I took the seed and replanted it root down. The seed was planted flat as I do all my seeds (when you plant the seed flat it will emerge without the seed coat attached ) but it still sent it's root up about a 1/2 inch above the surface.
I have a area 3 feet x 4 feet 1 foot high heated with a heat pad (used for sore muscles other than planting time) and a desk light. I cover it with plywood and sleeping blankets. the temperature is 88- 90 degrees. I initially used a 40 watt bulb but the temp was only 82-4. I than tried a 60 watt but the temp went to 94 , I than found a 52 watt which brought my desired temp. I don' t presoak my seeds, I have tried this but feel I have better success direct seeding in pots. My plants start to emerge in 3 days. The soil mix I use is very important, I use the pro mix used by greenhouses. I have tried to use others but some when you add water remain wet and the seeds could rot. The same day the plants emerge I move them to a small out door heated hot house (with a1500 watt heater) if not done right away they will become long and spindally. When moved to the hot house I transplant into a 5 gallon pail placed upside down on a piece of plywood 1 x 1 foot This will allow me to let the plant grow without restricting the plant growth.
