Floating Row Material - Ref. page 84 ,How to Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins by Don Langevin

I have been watching with interest the discussion about the orientation
of seeds in the ground. I planted all nine of my giant pumpkin seeds with the
point down and they all sprouted in seven days. The seed halves remained on one
of them, but soon fell off. I have seen an occurrence with a sunflower seed
where the seed halves stayed on the stem and kept the leaves from developing.
Now for my question to the group. I read in the above referenced book
that "floating row material is an essential ingredient in growing giant
pumpkins, because it has so many uses." Can someone tell me what is floating
row material? Is it like a plastic sheet or what? Since is "essential" and
has "so many uses", I would appreciate knowing what I have been missing.

Thank You
