Seed casing on the sprout.

I have got a quick question for the multitude of knowledge out there.

Most of my seeds have germinated and broken the soil.  Some of them 
are about 1" above the surface and they still have the shell casing 
around the leaves.  Should I remove it, or wait until it drops off 
naturally?
