Blair,
I have found that the sooner you can get the shell off, the sooner the
sprout will take off and go. It takes the seedling a lot of energy to shed
the coat (sometimes) as it can become very hard. What I do is take a spray
bottle with warm water and mist the seedling and shell coat. I spray it
lightly, wait 5 minutes, spray it again wait a few more minutes. The shell
will become somewhat soft and pliable, then the coat should slip off easily
with no damage to the seedling.
