I don't think you would want to restrict the roots to a garbage can.  It
proably would grow.  But would be limited.  My DAD had a plant with a
pumpkin set looking good a gopher came up an severed the vine.  Why I think
it was in the way of his tunnel door.  I had a gopher that ate a hole right
through the bottom of a giant.  So your on the right track worrying about
these guys so trap them, smoke them bait them give them hell be persistant
and they will leave+++ no dynamite,++++++++++++++BROCK
