Hi Everyone, Sorry if this takes a while to down load, it is a long
article, I did not want to send it as an attachment!

"GROWER'S PRIZE STAKE - 1997"

Ottawa - St. Lawrence Growers Newsletter # 16 April 1997

By: Bob Marcellus, PO Box 220, Spencerville, ON, Canada,
KOE 1X0.

Let's make It Interesting in 1997!
Call this a private member's initiative if you wish, or maybe even a
gentleperson's wager. Since this idea came to me last week, just before the
Ottawa-St. Lawrence Growers Seminar, I'll take it upon myself to enter the
names of all individual pumpkin growers who send me $10.50 U.S. or $15.00
CDN along with I.D. Info (below) before August 15th 1997 ($10.00 US $14.25
CDN) for the prize stake and 50 cents ($0.75 CDN) for entry and
coordination costs. Entries must be received before August 15th. $10 US per
entry received will be given equally back (33.33% of the monies received
each) to the Three Grower Entrants (on October 15th, 1997) who grow the
Heaviest Entrant Pumpkin, the 25th Heaviest Entrant Pumpkin and the 50th
Heaviest Entrant Pumpkin in the "1997 Growers' Prize Stake". Weigh ins must
be at (and only at) recognized GPC sites on October 4th 1997. Funds will be
held in Trust locally at the Royal Bank in a Growers' Prize Stake US $ Bank
Account. Removal of funds from this account will only be by a dually signed
cheque from Al Eaton and myself. Only entries received for the Northern
Hemisphere will be eligible to received this Growers' Prize Stake this
year.

Names will be posted on the Ottawa-St. Lawrence Growers' web site @
http://infoweb.magi.com/~farmrgus/ at the end of May, June, July, August
and September. It will be the grower's responsibility to ensure that their
name is on the list (by checking into the web site) and to insure that they
have proof that they have sent in their money. (Only Cheques or Money
Orders made payable to "Bob Marcellus' Growers' Prize Stake" will be
accepted (keep your receipt). If you see that your name is not on the list
at the end of August 1997, then you will be responsible for contacting me
in writing before the 15th of September 1997 with proof that you did send
in your money on time (and a replacement Cheque or Money Order) I will not
assume any responsibility whatsoever for your name not getting on the list
and names (I.D. Info.) will be entered alphabetically as follows: Last
Name, First Name & Middle Initial, Phone #, State or Province, Country.
(Even though this should not be too hard to coordinate since we will have
$10/grower and the total number os US dollars/10. At times however mail
does get lost).

Last year the 50th place in the GPC was a 692 lb. pumpkin (however 50th
place in this contest may be a 200 lb. pumpkin) and of course, first place
was a 1006 lb. pumpkin.

By splitting the prize monies (between 1st, 25th, and 50th places) it gives
us underdogs a chance at winning something, as long as we weigh in.
Consider that there may be 20 or more sites year without least 100 growers
each who could participate in this Growers' Prize Stake. On a broader scale
there could be as many as 5000 - 10,000 growers who could participate in
this endeavour. This is why I'm asking for 50 cents to cover the entry and
coordination costs. Considering the short fuse for this year, I'll
coordinate this year's Growers' Stake. I'll do this even if only two
growers enter. Note: I will also be participating in this year's Growers'
Stake myself as will Al Eaton. Also note if 25 or less people enter then
all monies will go to the heaviest pumpkin grown by an entrant. If 50 or
less people enter and more than 25 enter then only 1st and 25th will
receive prizes. Growers also note to ensure that your complete local
weighoff results get submitted to the GPC Headquarters soon after the
weighoff, otherwise I won't know your official weights. Note: Official
Pumpkins only, no squash.

I know that we are not growing Giant Pumpkins for the money but let's make
it interesting in 1997!
