Well, folks, I am on the way. I started two seeds last night/this
morning, one of which will grow in my current Alexandria garden. First
I carried the two seeds around all day and talked to them and meditated
with them. Next, I filed the edges. Then... I really like the bubbling
idea, but I have no old fish tank aerators AND my kids really want to be
involved in the project... so I put each seed in a glass of tepid water,
gave each kid a straw, and said, "Now, blow." They were probably good
for 20 minutes or so, between giggles. Then the seeds sat in the water
in the germination chamber (86-88 degrees) overnight. This morning,
into the ziplocks with damp paper towels.
I find it fascinating that each of these seeds seems to have a distinct
personality. The 550, I swear, is a friendly seed. It is a rich color,
the edges filed off beautifully, in water it seemed to react
immediately, fluffing up a little and the color got even brighter. This
seed has been cooperative at each step, and I think it is going to pop
really fast and grow enthusiastically.
Now that 299 on the other hand... Whew. It made me work. It is
smaller and paler... But it is real full and solid feeling - it's clear
that it has a lot substance to it, but take filing, for instance. The
edges of that seed are like molded plastic! They wouldn't file! I kept
working and working and finally gave up. It was just too tough. In
water, it just sat. No fluffing, no color change. I'm not sure if it
expected me to build a little dome for it or what! Overnight? No
noticeable change. There are no deer in my basement, so I know that's
not a problem. I'm not sure what to expect from this seed!
I will probably start seeds in another week or so for my Dad... Lessee,
so far there is a LaRue, a Wiberg, a Wallace and an Eaton on the list.
I wonder how those seeds will behave!?
Beth
